Julia was a teacher for fifteen years after graduating from Auckland University with a Masters of Science degree in Molecular Biology and Mathematics. Since then she has committed herself to painting and printmaking.
“I have developed a body of work using egg tempera and ink on a traditional gesso ground. I am always awestruck by the beautiful simplicity and enduring quality of the art of the ancient world with the airy feeling of the ground breaking through the layers of paint."
"I see my painting and printmaking as a form of alchemy. These artworks become planes, parallel to nature, dream spaces that receive impressions from nature or my unconscious world and are read as signs. The act of painting is an excavation, a summoning up of my own archetypal forms.”
The works on Hannemahle or Rives de Lin archival paper are made of hand inked solar plate intaglio prints or mono prints most using the chinecolle process thus conferring uniqueness to each artwork. Many prints are made from multiple plates.
Julia has been represented by a variety of galleries over the years and also sells artworks from her studio.
